It could be time to eat more blueberries.
Anthocyanins, the phytochemicals that give the small round fruits their rich blue
colouring, can reduce your risk of cardiovascular disease by up to 20 per cent, say
scientists at the Department of Nutritional Sciences at King’s College London. In the
study, published in The Journals of Gerontology: Series A, half the participants were
given a drink containing the equivalent of 200g of blueberries,
and the other half a control drink. Within just two hours, measurable benefits were
noticed. After a month of consuming 200g of blueberries a day, their average blood
pressure dropped by 5mm Hg comparable to the reduction obtained using
medication. Impressive.
